Winter arrived last weekend. I knew winter had come because it was too cold to leave the window in the bedroom open, and even with it closed I needed an additional quilt layer on the bed. And the rain, of course.

I’m still trying to catch up.

During my childhood in eastern Idaho, the seasons were long, slow things that drifted into each other in a stately and dignified march. Spring meant weeks of anticipation as the snow began to melt, the weather warmed, and the earth woke up slowly and somewhat cranky (rather like myself in the morning). Spring gradually moved into summer, marked by the last day of school and days really warm enough to leave the sweater at home. Autumn meant crisp days scented with wood smoke and colored by leaves and pumpkins. Around the time the last leaf gave out, the first snow would come and the world would go back to sleep.

Here in the Portland metro area, seasons change fast. One day it’s 85 degrees and sunny and I have the fans going. The next day (literally) the furnace starts running, I’m cranking up the gas fireplace, and the cold rains have come. Spring comes when the rains turn warmer. And my lawn needs mowing year round.

I keep waiting for the gradual seasonal changes of my childhood. After 30 years in Portland, it has occurred to me that I’m not going to get them. But I keep hoping.

Yeah… so I’m playing Myst V… don’t bug me. The Myst franchise are the only games I really like. That and the Doom franchise. Strange bedfellows, I know, but there you have it.

I’ve also completed part of the beaded bag for the class I’m taking at Tangle. And I’ve started my next sweater with Noro Silk Garden in a really yummy color. I’ll try to get pics up later.

I might head over to the Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival today, although I realize the dangers of doing so given the state of my stash piggy-bank (see above reference to Silk Garden).

And I made a small change to Owen Winkler’s Countdown plugin for WordPress. Countdown does the “present future” list of upcoming events in the right-hand sidebar. I’ve added “daily” logic so that an event that spans multiple days, like the Oregon Flock & Fiber Festival or Banned Books Week will show up every day until it’s finished.

And I do work full time. Really!

So I haven’t only been playing Myst.

sensational shirttail sweater

I have not been idle, this long weekend, and here’s the proof!

Sensational Shirttail is finally finished. I’m quite pleased with it, as it does have the same slouchy goodness that the picture in the book shows. I should have knit the arms a bit shorter, but they’re OK if I roll the cuffs up. I might take them out. But probably not.

I used a tiny, tiny part of one of the two extra skeins I bought last weekend in a panic, sure that I didn’t have enough. So my panic was justified. In a small amount.

I’m trying to decide what my next “big” project will be. I’d like to do Tilt, but I might have to wait until payday to afford all that Noro Silk Garden.

I had some of the Noro Kochoran left over from the Sensational Shirttail. The resulting in-store credit caused these little goodies to jump into my bag and beg to be taken home.

And what do you think these will become?

I have some ideas… 😀

And if any of my ideas pan out, you’ll be the first to know!

It’s been a busy, busy week. I think everybody’s trying to get caught up before the 3-day weekend. I don’t have any plans for the weekend, but I’m certainly looking forward to having an extra day off.

On the knitting front, I’ve finished the back and both fronts of the Sensational Shirttail sweater and I’ve started on the sleeves. The “secret project” is coming along quite nicely. All will be revealed at the end of the month.

On the techie front, the PI move is complete and I’m about to start moving mommymonster to the new servers. It should be an easier move as it doesn’t have the big sql database underneath it that PI does.

Lace socks in Mermaid for E

I’ve finally finally finished E’s socks! YEA! I don’t know why these socks took me so long. I like the yarn. I like the pattern. Certainly I like E. It will remain a mystery. I did feel more inspired toward the end and knit like a madwoman with needles flying until I got them finished.

I couldn’t decide on what I wanted the top to look like. In the end I went with a simple roll. I like the way it looks and I’m happy with the result. I did a bit of rib at the top, as I didn’t think that the lace would pull in enough to hold the socks up.

close up of lace pattern

Now for the particulars:

Kit toe-up, two-at-a-time from Blue Moon Fibers Soft Rock in a colorway called “Mermaid.” I used a pair of Addi Turbo circular needles in size US # 1.

The toe is the “fan toe” from Queen Kahuna’s Crazy Toes And Heels Sock Book. In a happy accident (wish I could say I planned it), the line of increases in the toe just matches the lace pattern. Click on the top picture to see the bigger version, and you can see the line of increases marching up the toe to the lace. The heel is Eye of Partridge.

The lace is a vine pattern that I “borrowed” from the book Socks Socks Socks. Except I knit it upside-down because the original pattern is top-down rather than toe-up. And I used my own sock pattern not the one in the book.

I don’t really care for the way the colors pooled just in front of the heel, but at least both socks pooled in exactly the same way, with a green pool on one side and a purple pool on the other.

I’m now starting on a mystery project (shh… don’t tell). And then I’ll start on Clapotis # 2. And finish the sweater, of course!

colorful socks

I’ve been inspired by all of the colorful Cascade Fixation I picked up from Tangle recently. After all, why have all those great colors if I don’t use them… all of them… in one pair of socks…

These were started on our trip to the coast last Sunday. #1 Son egged me on a bit. That’s cool, Mom. I like those colors. Use more of that. But I have no one to blame but myself.

OK. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it. Click on the pic to see the progress on both socks of the pair.

I can hear my sweater even as I type: Only a few more rows! Only a few more rows! But I won’t be wearing a sweater for a couple of months. I’ll get back there, after a pair of Fixation socks, or two.

I can hear E’s lace socks whimpering: Please finish me! E wants to wear me! They may be lace, but they’re wool. We finally have warm weather. E will maybe wait a little while. Until I finish a pair of Fixation socks, or two, or three…
