Consumer confidence down:

Consumer confidence fell in October to its lowest level in seven months. The downturn is fueled mostly by soaring energy costs, sluggish hiring, the war in Iraq and an increasingly nasty election. Analysts worry that the downturn in confidence will result in less spending by already debt-laden consumers.

“Consumers are more concerned about the future than they are about current conditions and I think that has a lot to do with the high oil prices we’re seeing and probably some of the election rhetoric,” said Gary Thayer, chief economist at A.G. Edwards & Sons in St. Louis.

Consumer confidence in hiring is up very slightly, but businesses remain cautious about hiring workers given the record oil prices and the rise in health care costs.

“While consumers’ assessment of the labor market showed a moderate improvement, the gain was not sufficient to ease concerns about job growth in the months ahead,” Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board’s Consumer Research Center, said in a statement.

This is not good new… especially here in Oregon where we still face the highest unemployment rate in the nation.

OQO Model 01

OK. So this is pretty cool. A fully functional WinXP machine… in the palm of your hand. The OQO Model 01 has arrived.

I have to admit this is a snazzy looking little doodad that warms the geeky cockles of my heart. It’s just 4.9″ x 3.4″ x .9″ and weighs just 14 oz., yet it runs standard WinXP. That means it runs standard XP software, although with a 1 GHz processor, a 20 GB hard drive and 256K of RAM it’s not going to set the town on fire. This is a word-processing, email-reading, contact-keeping, calendar-watching sort of device. It has a thumb keyboard and a trackstik with mouse buttons as well as a digital pen and a thumb wheel. It looks easy to use. It can be hooked to a docking station for full-size use if desired.

WiFi is integrated, as are Firewire and USB ports. But it has no CD drive, so an external USB drive is required in order to load software. There are reports that it runs hot, so be careful sticking it in your pocket!

As cool as this little goody looks, retail is a not-so-cool $1899. For that price one can pick up a small, slim full-function notebook. There are early adapters that will go for the OQO Model 01, but I don’t think I’ll be among them.

For my money, I’ll stick to my syncing my Palm Tungsten T3 with my laptop at work and my computer at home, since I need both of those computers anyway. And the inconvenience is worth around $1500 to me.

Anybody know what happened to ORBlogs? Their server has been down since yesterday.

Since they provide me with some good reading every day, I hope it’s a temporary condition. 😥

[edit 10/26/04 2:55 PM] Mystery solved… The server is being moved to Oregon. Cool! Expected to be back up tomorrow some time.

Today I listened to both David Wu and Goli Ameri in person. It’s no surprise that Goli Ameri runs a negative campaign in person also.

Some other things I noticed:

David Wu never refered to Goli Ameri, either by name or indirectly, until just before he left. He did hand out a paper showing the differences in their positions, but he didn’t refer to it. He talked about what he has done in Congress, what he plans to do during the next term, and what his ideas are for issues of interest to Oregonians like high unemployment and trade.

Goli Ameri didn’t discuss her plans. She mostly discussed how David Wu is “wrong.” When asked how she would address our leaky borders, she replied that it’s a tough issue and a Congressional study needed to be funded. She picked up the sheet that Wu had left behind showing the differences in their positions and insisted that “he has it all wrong.” And, yet, when she went down the list to “explain” her position, he pretty much had it correctly.

For example, Wu said that Ameri is “for privatization of Social Security.” “No I’m not,” she said, “Because that would be ridiculous.” But she is for letting some Social Security contributions be voluntarily added into a fund to be invested in the stock market by the Social Security Administration. (Oooo… that’s who I want investing my money! U betcha!)

Another example: She insists that she would never vote to “deprive a woman of her right to choose.” But she promises to vote to make it damn hard. (i.e. 24 hour waiting periods, parental notification, voting to outlaw some medical procedures) From where I’m sitting, there’s not a lot of difference there.

My vote had already gone to David Wu. But had I not voted yet, this would not have changed my mind.

Some things in life are just not explainable.

Why does the top of Moo Cow’s head smell like ketchup? It has since she was a kitten. Except when it smells like flowers. She’s an indoor cat with access to neither ketchup nor flowers. But there it is. Both of the other cats smell like… cat.

Why do spoons disappear, but not knives or forks? Why do the cups multiply in the cupboards, but I can never find a glass?

Where is it that socks go? Sometimes they turn up weeks after having disappeared. Are they going on vacation without me?

Why is it that a medium pizza isn’t enough for two (when one is a teenager) but a large is way too much. Can’t the pizza places sell a medium-large?

Where did my Cat Stevens CD go?

I’m running this again because I find it so amazing that less than 40% of Bush supporters actually understand what his position is on fundimental foreign policy issues.

Candidates’ Foreign Policy Positions:

[…]Majorities of Bush supporters misperceive his positions on a range of foreign policy issues. In particular they assume he supports multilateral approaches and addressing global warming when he has taken strong contrary positions on issues such as the International Criminal court and the Kyoto Agreement. A majority of Kerry supporters have accurate perceptions of Kerry positions on the same issues.

[…]In all these cases, there is a recurring theme: majorities of Bush supporters favor these positions, and they infer that Bush favors them as well. For example, in PIPA’s September 8 – 12 poll 54% of Bush supporters favored participation in Kyoto, 66% favored participation in the land mines treaty, and 68% favored a treaty prohibiting testing nuclear weapons (CTBT). Apparently in the absence of evidence to the contrary, Bush supporters assume Bush feels as they do.

[…]Kerry supporters were much more accurate in assessing their candidate’s positions on all these
issues.

I’ll ask again… You Bush supporters: What is this??? Instead of checking to see what your candidate’s views actually are, you simply assume they believe what you believe because… why? You like the guy? You think he’s the same religion? He’s the same political party and daddy always voted that way? What???

Here’s the table again showing the percentage of supporters of each candidate who correctly understood their candidate’s position on various foreign policy issues. Red=Bush, Blue=Kerry:

Issue Bush’s position Bush Supporters Correctly perceiving Bush position Kerry’s position Kerry Supporters Correctly Perceiving Kerry Position
Labor & Environmental standards in trade agreements Opposes 13 % Supports 81 %
Participation in land mines treaty Opposes 20 % Supports 79 %
Participation in a treaty that bans the testing of nuclear weapons Opposes 24 % Supports 77 %
Participation in the International Criminal Court Opposes 38 % Supports * 65 %
Participation in Kyoto agreement on global warming Opposes 39 % Supports * 74 %
Building a missile defense system Build now 47 % Research only 68 %
Defense spending Expand 57 % Keep same 43 %
Who should take the lead in Iraq on writing a new Constitution and building a democratic government US 70 % UN 88 %
* Supports in principle but wants to negotiate terms for US involvement

How scary this is? In most cases less than 40% of Bush supporters know what his position is. In only two cases, defense spending and the new Iraqi government, do more than half know. On the other hand, in most cases better than 75% of Kerry supporters know what his position is. Only once (defense spending) does it fall below 50%, and even then it’s better than the majority of the Bush supporters.

You can see my write-up on the whole report from the University Of Maryland here. In many cases Bush supporters are living in fantasy land. Unfortunately reality may come crashing down rather quickly if Shrub wins the election.
